This mini-course will begin with a tutorial on commonly used methods for the generation of brain or brain-related organoids and proceed to discussion of the applications and promise of organoids for studying human brain development and disease, together with an appraisal of the caveats and limitations. Discussion will also include recent technical advances, the organoid fidelity in terms of brain architecture, cellular composition, molecular identity, and functional activity as well as ethical issues. Sessions will consist of presentations by UCSF and invited speakers coupled with a critical discussion of related published literature. Students will also be challenged to conceive of creative solutions to specific technical and conceptual problems that are current roadblocks in the field.
