Vaccines are a monumental achievement in biomedicine. However, some infectious diseases lack effective vaccines - pathogens are tricky, and the immune system is complex. In this course, we will discuss fundamental principles of vaccine design, including novel vaccine strategies for targeting challenging pathogens (HIV, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, malaria parasites, and others). These concepts will be explored via interactive lectures given by content experts in immunology, virology, and engineering, as well as in discussions of key manuscripts in each topic area. Students with any level of micro/immuno background are welcome.
