Engaging the public with science is more important than ever before. In the face of pandemics, climate change, and a growing lack of public trust in science there are increasing calls for scientists to learn how to communicate effectively with the public.  This mini course will provide students an introduction to key concepts in science communication, through reading of foundational papers and guest lectures from scholars in cognitive science, communications, and science education. Students will then explore mediums for communicating with the public, such as social media, film, news, museums, and community events. This course is designed for students on any career trajectory – including academia – given the importance of science communication in advancing research. There will be at least two field trips to the Exploratorium, KQED, or Cal Academy.
