Course Description: Communicating science to the public is now more important than ever before. For the benefits of science to be realized - whether vaccines or climate change - there must be public understanding. This mini course will provide an introduction to key concepts in science communication, through reading of foundational papers from cognitive science, communications, and science education. Students will then explore mediums for communicating with the public, such as social media, film, news, museums, and community events, through guest lectures, critiques, and creation of their own materials. Recommendations and examples for more inclusive science communication will be integrated throughout the readings and exercises. This course is designed for students on any career trajectory – including academia – given the importance of science communication in advancing research.
