The ability to self-organize into functional three dimensional structures is a hallmark of our cells and tissues. However, we are just beginning to learn the principles by which different cell and tissue types achieve their functional form. This short course will explore key principles governing the self-organization of tissues through the reading and discussion of seminal papers. Topics will include cell-cell signaling, polarity, tissue mechanics, ECM, differentiation, signaling circuits, and attempts to integrate these topics into a unifying view of tissue formation.
