In this course, you will learn about great experiments in the history of biology through careful reading of select papers that have changed the course of our science. See reading list in UCSF Box (https://ucsf.box.com/s/a7erzyisut98m5xj3lxa77qaw1y90p11). The goal of our discussions will be to learn how to read these papers in depth, how to identify key scientific questions, and how to apply methods and scientific logic incisively to carry out effective experimental design. By examining how pathbreaking scientists thought outside the box, the course also aims to stimulate students to think innovatively in planning their thesis research. From the 2023 course evaluation: "This was one of the most enjoyable and valuable courses I have ever taken, because of both the material selected and his skill as an instructor."
